Freedom of religion or belief in China
Experiences from the Sino-Norwegian human rights dialogue
In well over a decade, Norway and China have been engaged in a human rights dialogue, where the topic of freedom of religion or belief has been high on the agenda. Religious freedom and the implementation of international standards in both Norway and China have been discussed by politicians and experts from the two countries at annual roundtable conferences.
This book looks at a concrete collaboration project that was initiated as a result of the dialogue. Since 2000, the Oslo Coalition for Freedom of Religion or Belief has been exchanging delegation visits with different Chinese religious organisations and official agencies. The book presents some of the insights and experiences gained by the Coalition. Well aware of critical reports on some aspects of religious policies in China, the Coalition elicited the views of their Chinese partners on these reports and discussed international standards on freedom of religion or belief. These exchanges brought about valuable insights and increased mutual understanding. One important conclusion was that there existed a genuine conviction among administrators, religious leaders and practitioners that religion was in the process of acquiring an ever more prominent place in Chinese society, and that this was happening with the blessing of the central authorities.
